Condon, OR (Rest Day)

Today was a rest day partly due to a late start because we had items to
pick up at the post office which didn't open until 8:45am but we also
hadn't had a full rest day since Wyoming. We've had a couple of short
days but it just isn't the same as a complete rest day.

I put new tires on today. This will be it and it should pull me all
the way to Alaska.

For the past few days, we been riding through the John Day valley area.
We saw a road sign marked "Traveling back in time". It really does
seem like we went back in time. We had a day to spend in Condon so we
visited the Library as well as the local cafes and stores. As I sat
back and watched people, they all greeted each other by name as well as
trade stories and had a conversation. Everybody knew everyone else and
they were all friends.

Having grown up in a big city, it's not quite like that as many of you
know. Not to say you can't be neighborly in a big city but in small
towns, neighbors go beyond just being neighbors. They help each other
out like fix plumbing, help garden, and sometime give a cup of sugar.
The city is well, just too big. It's nice to know that towns like this
still do exist and thrive. I even felt like a local because everyone was
curious as to what we were doing.

We will get an early start tomorrow to beat the wind. The fan seems to turn on at 2pm on full blast.

Washington here we come.

Good night.
